Featured Question!

Question:

How should I go about learning scales on guitar?
I've been playing guitar for a year, and I think I'm pretty good and well-rounded, but I need to start cracking down on my scales.

What should I start with, and how should I memorize them.

Also how can I learn to find which scale a specific song applies to and try breaking the song down from there?

Guitar Nerd Answer:

I suggest you start with the pentatonic scales. (Major and Minor) These are the most common scales you will find in rock or blues style playing. After that, I HIGHLY recommend learning the modes! Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian. With these, you can play all over the fret board in a single key, and not worry about hitting a sour note! GN
